Knoxville, Tennessee: Experienced Divorce Lawyer
Attorney James R. LaFevor has more than 30 years of experience practicing family law in the courts in and around Knoxville, Tennessee. Our small law firm offers clients direct access to a seasoned attorney — at reasonable rates.
It's a good idea to talk to a lawyer as soon as you begin considering divorce. You can get early information about the process, as well as practical advice about your specific circumstances.
Family law and divorce cases are a major focus of our practice at the law office of James R. LaFevor. We handle divorces, including cases involving disputed child custody determinations or child support calculations. We also help clients apply for modifications to an existing divorce decree — or challenge a modification requested by a former spouse.
How Long Will It Take and How Much Will It Cost?
These are often the first questions we hear when we talk to new clients about the divorce process. In Tennessee, the waiting period is 60 days for a divorce when no children are involved. The waiting period is 90 days for a divorce involving children.
The question of how much a divorce will cost is more difficult to answer. Partly, the cost of divorce depends on the degree to which the spouses disagree about issues like division of marital assets and child custody. A long, hard-fought divorce will end up costing much more than a divorce where the spouses are able to reach compromise agreements that allow them to end the marriage amicably.
For Military Members: Do I Have to Appear in Person?
There are several ways in which our office helps active-duty military members who need to get a divorce. We offer discounted rates for active-duty military members. We are also able to coordinate our services by using telephones and e-mail to limit the need for our military clients to use deferments to travel to Knoxville.
Mr. LaFevor understands the difficulties faced by members of the military stationed with the 101st Airborne in Clarksville and with the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg and their family members, because he served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971. He was stationed in both Germany and Vietnam, and was ranger qualified and airborne qualified.
